Miracles!
Liam's weekly physical therapy has been in-home until last week when we transferred the service to a California Children's Services medical therapy unit (MTU) here in El Cajon. Thankfully the therapist that was doing his in-home therapy, Jodi, works at the MTU and has been able to retain him as a client, but still his first time was last Wednesday and he was anxious and non-cooperative for most of the session so I was very nervous about how yesterday would go; wondering if we'd made a mistake in transferring his services. His infant-toddler teacher also spoke to me last week about how he seemed to have regressed in his movement and wouldn't even push the toy shopping cart he usually uses to get around with his class. When you're told that your child will probably never walk, you cling to every hope and small indicator that the professionals will be wrong. Events last week, therefore, proved a trial of my faith. His therapist had recommended that we apply for a handicap placard for the car. We got it last week. As I walked him into therapy yesterday morning, I looked back at the car and noted with some, frankly, sadness that it sure was strange to see a handicap placard in my window. You can't help but go over all the future implications at moments like those. I refocused my attention on getting Liam to the door and waited in the hallway for him to finish his session with Jodi, unable to help mulling over all of the previous week's happenings and their ramifications.
At the end of the session Jodi stuck her head out a door about 30 feet from where I stood. She was sitting on a rolling stool and told Liam to come and get me. Much to my shock and absolute elation he walked on his own, with one minor course correction, the entire way! He proceeded to walk that same distance 2 more times. Words can't explain how it felt to see that miracle. I hope the videos below will in some way touch you like that moment did me.
Thank you for all of your love, prayers and support! Liam couldn't do what he does without it!
That made me tear up. He's so proud of himself! I'm so excited and happy for you all that he's progressing so well, and very thankful that you have such a wonderful team of people helping Liam.
