The internet is replete with horror stories of Angelman's children who, with few side effects, need only 2 - 4 hours of sleep per DAY! With baited breath we've prayed that this will not become our scenario. Liam, thankfully, has bucked this trend until about 3 weeks ago when he started going down hard and fast when we put him to bed only to wake up 1 1/2 to 2 hours later wide awake. Desperate for rest we have searched the internet frantically for solutions that other parents have found only to find that using things from melatonin to hard-core prescribed drugs has failed. Before trying anything we decided that perhaps we should seek a physician's input - DUH! So off to the doctor we trotted.
About the same time the sleep problems started Liam started sticking his finger in his ear. In the last couple months we had a small victory when we'd say, "Liam, where's your hair?" and he'd show us. He still can't identify any of his facial features on command so, still reeling from his hair find, we were excited that he had finally discovered his ear too! Do you see where this is going? Too bad we didn't see it until almost 3 weeks into an ear infection and sheer panic over evolving sleep patterns. Yup, Liam has an ear infection in his right ear probably related to the cold he had just prior to "discovering" his ear.
There is a silver lining in our tale - Liam was "telling" us that his ear hurt! We're so blessed as he's progressing well in advance of where they told us he'd be!
